Dean felt like trying something new with his storytelling and the westerns were an obvious choice. He was a fan of gunslinger movies and Green Shield already had a western writer in their camp. His name was Max Ellis and he was a long time contributor to Crime Scene. Max changed his pen name to Tex Clark because he didn't want his real name to be confused with the great western writer, Max Brand. Davis also changed his name for this series of books. He didn't want his mystery audience to be confused so he chose the pseudonym, Jericho Long. He felt the name would fit somebody "who wore cowhide and would regularly be scraping horse manure off his boots".
