This book is a sequel to The Long Sundown, but the reader did not need to know that book to start and understand Prairie Dance. Davis provided all the details and explanations needed, but not at the expense of boring the returning readers.

A small insignificant event that occurred in Chapter 3 of The Long Sundown has snowballed into a total misunderstanding that now leaves Jake Hobart wanted for murder. I won't spoil it for you if you haven't read either story, but it does involve all of the plot twists that Dean is known for.
