This is the story of an unnamed lone gunman who roams the plains trying not to get caught by the law. Throughout the whole book he talks to nobody "alive". What I mean is that he is so past the point of sanity from the guilt of killing so many men that their ghosts haunt him. This psycho-thriller is one of Davis' best books ever. He experiments with time juxtaposition, human paranoia, and hallucinations that leaves the reader feeling as confused and terrified as the main character. The ending of this story is classic Dean Davis.

"I never could have done this sort of story using King Bennett. His state of mind has never been near this fragile", Davis once said in an interview. "I wanted this guy to be totally alone with the skeletons in his closet, that's why I had him roaming the plains."
