First Printing: March 1958 Green Shield Catalog #: B132 On April 20, 1955 Liberace cut the ribbon on the new Riveria hotel and casino. The unique thing about this structure is that it was a whopping nine stories high. Before then most casinos and hotels were sprawling one or two story buildings. The Riviera started a trend that had all future hotels go upward instead of outward. Dean took this tidbit of architectural design and based a King Bennett book around it. A new hotel and casino is being built in town and the chief financier of the project has just been found dead. It appears that he was thrown off the roof of his soon to be completed multi-story hotel. Two weeks after this book came out, Kevin Greenfield's girlfriend and showgirl Kayla Zane was murdered. This devastated Dean and everyone at Green Shield Publishing. You have to realize this was the late fifties and celebrity stalking was a rarity. Her killer was Conrad Howard Metz who was the son of a prominent businessman in Texas. Conrad was living in Vegas and blowing his trust fund. He fell in love with Kayla after seeing her in a show. Over the course of a month he constantly tried to gain Kayla's affections. When he finally realized she wouldn't date him his love turned to anger. Since Kevin lived in L.A., Dean took the responsibility of keeping an eye on Kayla. On a Friday night in April of 1958 Dean had a business meeting he couldn't cancel. Kayla injured her ankle the previous night while dancing in a show so she decided to stay home and rest. The authorities and Kayla always saw Metz as a spoiled rich boy who was upset that couldn't get what he wanted. They never took his threats as totally serious. After the meeting Dean stopped by Kayla’s apartment to see how she was feeling. He found her dead in the bedroom. She was stabbed multiple times. Because of his forensics research experience for the King Bennett novels, Dean aided the Las Vegas Police in proving Metz as the killer. Metz spent the rest of his life in jail -- which was only about five months. While on kitchen duty he got into an argument with another inmate. As they began to fight the inmate used his judo experience and flipped Metz. He landed head first into a deep fat fryer that was turned on and making french fries. He died from the burns. |
