I'm Here, Miss DuShane

After being distraught with the death of Kayla Zane, Dean channeled that mourning, anger, and depression to create his masterpiece with The Crime Scene Trilogy. Friends convinced Dean, and even Kevin Greenfield, that Kayla would want them to enjoy life and to move on. This timeframe was in the spring of 1959. Both men decided it would be the perfect time to resurrect a project they always talked about doing together - an album of jazz music that would be a perfect companion to the King Bennett novels. See the web page on the To Be or Not to Be album for more info on this project.

The title for this book came from an evening out that Dean had with some friends. While doing the legwork for the To Be or Not to Be album he invited some of the best session musicians from the West Coast for a weekend in Vegas. They were in a nightclub and a few of them were involved in some heavy drinking. Dean recounts the story...

"Richie Grant, one of the best sax players at that time, was three sheets to the wind. The jukebox in this place was playing the latest release from the Clark Sisters, Bei Mir Bist Du Schon. This song was a remake that the Andrews Sisters originally did years ago."

"Anyway, I'm talking with Pete Candoli and all of a sudden Richie leans over and says in a slurred voice, 'What's this guy's problem...why does he have to go see this Miss DuShane?'"

"Pete and I were like, "What the heck are you talking about?'"

"Richie mumbled his question again, 'This Miss DuShane. Why does this guy have to go see her?'"

"After a minute or two we figured out he was misinterpreting Bei Mir Bist Du Schon as I'm Here, Miss DuShane. We almost died laughing."

"When I was driving home I came up with the brothel plot and it went from there."

The plot starts when King gets a call from the madam of California's most famous brothel. South of Los Angeles away from the hussle and bussle is a mansion gifted with the name Satin House. It gets this moniker from the many satin drapes and bed dressings. This place even has crystal doorknobs shaped as women's breasts. Because of this dwelling's reputation, the local women have given it a name they found more fitting...Satan House.

Anyway, King is called up there by the madam (and former love interest) to help her out with a small problem. It seems a client has been found dead in one of the mansion's many bedrooms. Bennett cooperates with the local sheriff to solve the murder as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, the media has already been leaked the story and all mayhem breaks loose from there.

The album was released in October of 1959. A song titled, I'm Here, Miss DuShane is on the album. It's the 3rd song on the 2nd side. The song came out before the book was published.
