First Printing: February 1962 Green Shield Catalog #: B184 After spending so many years hanging out and socializing with jazz musicians, it was time for Dean to write about their world. Jazz and smoky lounge music has always been a part of the King Bennett motif anyway. Dean once spoke about the musicians in his favorite city this way, "Even though Joe Blow might view our little burg as one big party town of good timers, Las Vegas has like a bazillion cliques. You have your gamblers, both winners and losers, your tourists, your townies, your hustlers and crooks, and your showfolk...which is subdivided between singers, dancers, comedians, and musicians. Sure, we all hang out together but there's nothing as relaxing as being with a group of people that share all your likes and dislikes." "If you want to really feel what it's like to live life the complete opposite of what God probably intended, hang out with a musician. When most of us are eating dinner these guys are just getting up. Their job is doing the thing they love the most and that's playing music. With these guys, everybody knows everybody; I'm not just talking within Vegas. You ask a horndog about some cat in New York and he most likely knows him. Heck, he's probably played with them!" |
