Walter Winchell |
|
For those of you old enough to know who Walter Winchell was, yes, that’s him on the cover. Winchell was the top gossip columnist of the day and was also a good friend of Dean and the Greenfield brothers. His newspaper column had millions of loyal readers. The circulation on Crime Scene was way down from its previous days and was about to be cancelled. Otto was trying to save money and made a few changes. He lowered the page count and released all of the writers and artists. Dean was the only one he kept. This basically meant that Dean had to fill the whole issue by himself. He came up with the gossip columnist story and presented it for approval. Winchell thought it would be a hoot since he knew most people in Hollywood would want to see him dead anyway. He even plugged the issue on his nationally syndicated radio show. The gimmick worked and sales of that month’s Crime Scene skyrocketed. It also marked the first time Dean Davis’ name was presented to a wide audience. Crime Scene’s circulation focused on such a select demographic that the broad exposure proved positive for Dean’s career. Otto Greenfield posed again for the cover. That’s him in the upper left hand corner behind Winchell’s head. The gentleman’s head on the right is Greenfield’s lawyer. The woman’s head near the lawyer is Otto’s wife. It’s funny to note that Otto valued his lawyer over his wife by making his head bigger than hers. The blonde is artist Bob Saxon’s wife. |
