First Printing: January 1957 Green Shield Catalog #: B120 Click was the last installment in the "Said" series. As you will see when you explore all of Dean's work he would occasionally do a string of books where the titles would revolve around a theme. Dean felt he made his point with the titles that featured inanimate objects "speaking". In 1955 while working on an article for Girlie-Q, Dean met pin-up queen Bettie Page. He once expounded on that meeting in an interview for Esquire magazine. "Bettie was pure class. She looked at every job professionally. She exuded this innocence that made you feel like you were sitting on a porch swing on a warm summer's night trying to figure out a way to kiss her. Although, your next thought of her involved handcuffs and whipped cream. It was a great mix!" "She told me about these camera clubs that she would pose for. It was basically a group comprised of amateur photographers who would pool their money together and hire models for an hour or two. These models would bring a variety of outfits and props and let these guys snap off a few rolls of film. It was mostly just cheesecake stuff." "After hearing about these clubs I came up with a plot that involved camera club models being murdered. In the story there's a model named Mattie Sage that gets involved with King while he tries to solve these murders. This woman could be Bettie Page's twin. I did this on purpose. I figured if I couldn't play out these fantasies with Bettie in real life I might as well let King have his fun with her literary equivalent." |
