First Printing: August 1958 Green Shield Catalog #: B134 Angel Tears is a story that is based on Kayla Zane's murder (See Who Let Temptation in? and Hit the Ground Dying if you’re not familiar with Kayla). The plot involves a Vegas showgirl who is killed by a jealous and crazed admirer. Dean originally wanted the title to be There is No God, but Otto Greenfield thought it would attract too much negative publicity. Angel Tears was the compromise. The title came about when jazz great Chet Baker called Kevin Greenfield to give his condolences and said, "I'm sure her death made the angels cry." On the back cover of the book Dean and Kevin wrote and designed it so that the first letter in each sentence was a capital letter in a bold setting. When you strung those bold letters together as words it spelled out "there is no God". No one ever caught this layout trick until 1976 when literary critic Harry Vickers was putting together an article for Writer's World on Dean's work. |
