And Those Who Know
Third part in "The Crime Scene Trilogy"
First Printing: June 1959
Green Shield Catalog #: B145

This is the part where King Bennett takes on the case at the request of the club's owner. Even though the Las Vegas Police solve the case on their own, it's King who is the first to find Ross in his basement apartment. This confrontation is incredible. Captain Fleming's rationale plays prominently in how King eventually comes to terms with Greta's murder and solidifies him as one of the best cops that ever graced the pages of mystery literature.

Dean comments, "King starts off this book as his usual easy going self but grows pretty solemn as the brutality of the crime is exposed. Truthfully, it felt uncomfortable for me to write King this way, but I did want him to be the detective. My life was pretty easy going until Kayla's death shook and crumbled my whole world. It took a while for me to feel 'all right' again. I figured if I went through this traumatic of an experience, King should also. Writing the trilogy helped me get out a lot of the grief."

If you explore the Girlie-Q magazine section of this web page, please check out the January issue from 1960. This magazine is the hardest Dean Davis collectible to find! It features a short story titled, And Those Who Mourn. This seven-page piece shows how Greta's murder was handled by her family. The timeline seems to be about two months after the horrible event and spotlights the breakfast routine of Greta's parents. In the end you feel that this couple is not only mourning the tragic death of their daughter, but also the death of their marriage, that unbeknowst to them, happened years before. It's only now that they realize how empty their lives are.

The reason this magazine is so hard to find is because the print run of Girlie-Q was much lower than the run of the paperbacks that totaled into the millions. You can maybe once a year find one on an auction site. The starting price is usually around $50.
